ROUGH SLEEPING IN ENGLAND CONTINUES TO RISE

Figures announced by the government show rough sleeping in England has risen 15% since last year and a shocking 169% since the Conservatives took government in 2010.

The estimated 4,751 people living rough on England’s streets is the highest since records began and paint a truly catastrophic picture of a country that is run for the few and not the many.

At Full Council on January 30th Slough Labour Group will seek the support of Council in passing a motion calling on the government to take immediate action in tackling a homelessness crisis caused on their watch.

The motion will call on the government to provide adequate funding for councils to deal with rough sleeping and prevent homelessness, alongside seeking reforms to tenancies.

Slough Labour Group will also be looking to introduce housing measures reaching into the tens of millions of pounds at next month’s Council Budget Setting Meeting to ensure every Slough resident has the opportunity to live in a safe, warm and decent home.

Cllr Mohammed Nazir, Lead Member for Housing and Corporate Finance said:

“Rough sleeping has risen 15% since last year and 169% since the Conservatives took office in 2010, today’s announcement is a further reminder of the awful consequences of conservative policies – from housing to welfare they are causing real and growing hardship.

In next month’s Labour budget for Slough I will announce measures totalling in the tens of millions of pounds to take action to tackle and prevent homelessness and to help to ensure every Slough family has a decent home to live in.”
