Slough Labour Party Manifesto for the Local Elections 2023
Champion our communities and take our town forward.
Housing
Labour will help get the homes built that local people need. We will work with the police to make Slough a safer place.
A Labour Council will:
• Prioritise the supply of more social and affordable homes
• Seek public realm improvements as part of all major development projects
• Strengthen partnerships between the Police, the Council and Residents’ Groups
• Seek to grow Neighbourhood Watch and
Neighbourhood Action Groups to get more joined-up solutions to problems.
Families, Children & Young People
We want Slough Schools to stay among the best in the country; and our young people to be safe, secure and successful. We will improve opportunities and life chances for residents.
A Labour Council will:
• Work with our schools to keep driving high standards; focussing on A-Levels and skills
• Invest in more preventative support to help families with problems
• Keep working to improve life chances and tackle inequalities (especially in health)
• Ensure there is always help available for the most vulnerable.
Clean & Environmental Spaces
We will keep public spaces clean and litter free, we will re-wild areas and help residents recycle more.
We will secure new funds to plant more street/public trees.
A Labour Council will:
• Act promptly to clear dumped rubbish from public space and local parks
• Keep Slough’s streets clean and litter free
• Work with partners (such as WRAP and the
Wildlife & Wetlands Trust) – to re-wild areas, reduce waste and help residents recycle more
• Use ‘planning gain’ monies and grants to plant trees and keep public trees in good condition.
Regeneration
Now the redevelopment of Slough’s High Street shopping area is moving to delivery, we will work with the developers to facilitate a modern, new High Street. We will improve public transport links and access to Slough’s shopping areas.
A Labour Council will:
• Press to get re-development in the town centre and High Street underway, as planning permissions are concluded
• Ensure the masterplan for the town centre contains a good mix of workspaces, homes, retail, leisure, food and beverage destinations
• Improve access to and from the town centre; with better bus connectivity and design upgrades to highways, cycling and walking routes.
Sustainable Council
We will work to ensure the Council is sustainable; residents can see their money is well-spent, and local people have the services they need. We will always protect your core services.
A Labour Council will:
• Complete the Council’s financial repair and ensure it is fit for the future – setting out balanced budgets for the next three years.
• Complete the disposals programme of surplus assets to release funds.
• Improve the Council’s governance processes and procedures.
Better Standards of Service
We will ensure residents get good standards of service – with Council calls answered promptly, efficient online services, and complaints and enquiries responded to properly.
A Labour Council will:
• Improve and expand digital services and reduce call waiting times.
• Work with contractors to speed up and improve the repairs to Council homes.
• Provide regular updates about Council
services and be honest in our communications to residents and businesses.
